Sherwood School District Board of Directors has unanimously agreed to send to voters a local option education levy. A combination of short falls in state funding, mounting inflation, overestimated revenue predictions, plus added PERS and paid leave costs have left the District with no other choice. The measure is expected to raise $6.5 million per year for the District over the next 5 years with the objective of maintaining existing education programs.
The education levy calls for $1.50 per $1,000 assessed value. Sherwood’s neighboring school districts have had similar levies in place for years – Portland $1.99, Lake Oswego $1.64, North Clackamas $1.63, West Linn-Wilsonville $1.50, Beaverton $1.25, and Tigard-Tualatin $1.00. The great thing about a local education levy is the dollars stay here in Sherwood and the School Board is committed to using the dollars for teaching and not for administrative purposes.
Without passage of the education levy, the District expects reductions would include 66 teachers and classified staff, such as custodians, aides and others, plus furlough days. This would be devastating to our students and our community!
